Owen & Allergies: Intro

by
baby owen in swaddle

This is the first blog post I will be sharing as I document my journey, as an anaphylactic mom, raising my son Owen. I have yet to find any information or stories about mothers with anaphylaxis raising babies and their journeys.

I am excited to share a unique voice and perspective in the allergy community as I raise Owen.

I see these posts going a couple of different ways. Initially, the posts will document anything allergy related, but will inevitably change as we begin to introduce solid food to Owen.

the ideal option: no allergies

Praying that Owen does not have any food allergies, I will document the process of trying new foods as well as doctor visits, and any other allergy issues that would arise.

Here are a few of my biggest questions if Owen were not to have any allergies.

  1. How will the process of introducing foods go?
  2. Will introducing foods be scarier or more emotional with me being an anaphylactic mama?
  3. Obviously I can’t feed Owen peanuts for my own safety, so what will that look like? Will Nolan feed him? Will we feed him peanuts at the doctors office?
  4. When he gets to school, what will I do if there is a craft or activity that involves peanut butter?
  5. How will I stay safe while Owen is able to eat my allergens?

the other option: allergies

If Owen does end up with any allergies, I will also document our journey and what that will entail (again including doctors visits, trying foods, etc.).

Here are a few of my thoughts and questions if Owen were to end up with any allergies:

  1. Will he have more or less allergies than I do?
  2. Will his allergies be as severe as mine, or will they be more mild?
  3. Will his allergies be only to food, or will he also have environmental and medication allergies?

my thoughts

As with all of my blog posts, I hope this will be able to encourage and inform others. There is definitely a part of me that is afraid of this journey, as I have experienced firsthand the challenges and severity of living with anaphylaxis. However, I continue to remind myself of my wonderful parents, who had NO idea what food allergies were, and how they kept me safe. They didn’t teach me to live in fear, but constantly encouraged me and empowered me with information to help keep me safe (I wrote a whole post on how amazing they truly are). I hope to do the same for Owen, regardless of what the future holds.

With that being said, I invite you to join us on this journey – I’m sure it will be an exciting one!

With love and blessings,

Caity
