Owen & Allergies: 2-4 Months

This blog post includes information on the two doctor appointments we had for Owen from 2 to 4 months. If you are new here, the purpose of these posts are to document my journey, as an anaphylactic mom, raising my son Owen. You can read my first post in this series on the blog as well.

2 Month Appointment

This was our first appointment with our pediatrician, Dr. K. She had really wonderful reviews online, and I actually used to see her nurse practitioner when I was a child, so I felt more encouraged for our visit.

At this appointment, I did the same as the previous, informing her of my allergies and then asking how we should go about this. She shared that she would not want to test Owen for allergies unless he was showing any signs that he was allergic to something, and to introduce foods just as you would to any other baby. In upcoming appointments where we would discuss food, Dr. K would help us figure out the best way to do things (especially since I will not be able to introduce peanuts to him). She also shared that it would be a positive idea for me to meet with my allergist, and ask any further questions that I feel she would better be able to answer.

4 Month Appointment

At our four-month appointment, Dr. K informed us that she usually likes to have babies begin eating cereal around 5 months, and then to add in vegetables, followed by fruit. We reviewed the portion sizes and details, and were very excited to start Owen on solids.

One of my close friends had asked me the week before my appointment if I would be able to use my Epipen on Owen if he happened to have an allergic reaction. I wasn’t sure whether I could or not, so I asked this question to Dr. K. She shared that the dosage in my Epipen is double of what they would give an infant. Ideally, I would not use my Epipen on Owen, but of course, in a life-threatening situation, I would call 911 and use it if I had to.

Thankfully up to this point (Owen just turned 6 months), we have not had any issues with Owen drinking breastmilk, drinking formula, or eating cereal, fruits, and veggies. I am so grateful that we have not had any issues, and I continue to pray that he takes after Nolan, and does not have any allergies whatsoever.

Owen surprisingly loves all vegetables (even green beans), and LOVES pears. He doesn’t seem to hate any food, which is great for us!

What were your favorite foods to give your babies? What food/s do they hate, and what food do they love?

Blessings,

Caity
